A chiller produces chilled water for air-conditioning equipment. Its heat can be rejected through air-cooled equipment or a water-cooled plant, depending on the system.
Chilled water flows to connected coils, where it absorbs heat from air serving the building. The chiller then removes that heat from the water so the cycle can continue.

The plant layout determines whether heat is rejected directly to outside air or through a separate cooling-tower circuit.
